Markenfield Hall: the blog

Welcome to the Blog of Markenfield Hall, a small, moated, medieval manor house; just outside Ripon North Yorkshire. Privately owned, and very much a family home.

A photograph of Markenfield Hall taken at 6:00am, when the sun was just rising behind the trees. In the foreground are some wild-growing native plants, and then the wooden footbridge that leads over the moat and to the Hall itself. The Hall is illuminated by the first rays of the sun, which glint on the small glass panes of the medieval arched windows. The blue sky is streaked with clouds. The whole photograp is bathed in a golden light.

Just three miles south of Ripon, North Yorkshire, there is an extraordinary footpath that will lead you from the medieval ruins of Fountains Abbey, across undulating wooded parkland and bring you to Markenfield Hall, an impossibly lovely 13th and early 14th century fortified manor house, entirely surrounded by its moat. Despite its fairy tale exterior Markenfield is in fact home to Mr Ian Curteis and his wife, Lady Deirdre.
